Week 4 Assignment #2

Based on the assessment reading of Whales and Fish, this student reads is reading at a 95% accuracy rate. I found her error rate to be 1:18, being out of 202 words that put her at an error rate of every 18 words. She did show self-corrections in her reading, which I found to be 1:5. Overall I found her to be a strong reading, which pauses when she struggles on a word, but makes self-corrections.

When retelling or recapping the story the student had a strong understanding of the facts and was able to recite details of the differences between whales and fish: the babies are born; alive verse hatching from an egg, whales provide food their young while fish have to find it on their own as soon as they hatch. She also remembered similarities between the whale and the fish; how they have fins and flippers.

Overall, the student demonstrated understanding of the text and self-correction. Her weaknesses would be losing her place while she was reading the text. Perhaps relying on a guiding finger would help her with fluency.

  1. Hi Kylie, I like your suggestion about a guiding finger, although I recall that when I was young, my teacher discouraged me from using my finger to guide me through the reading, not sure why...

    1. I'm not sure why either...Perhaps so you wouldn't become dependent on it? Just a guess.

  2. I agree with your suggestion about a guiding finger. Once she started using her finger to keep her place, she didn't lose track of where she was so that would certainly help train her eyes to focus on each word while she's reading.

    1. I also remember using a bookmark, held horizontally, to help guide me.
